Do I need to stop training when I’m injured?

This is one of the most common questions we hear in the clinic: “I’m injured… so do I have to stop training?”
The short answer? Usually, no.

When something hurts, it’s easy to assume the safest option is to pull the handbrake and stop everything. But in most cases, completely resting isn’t the fastest way back to feeling good (or the best option to facilitate recovery). Rather, rehab is training – in the presence of an injury.

Our goal isn’t to shut you down. It’s to keep you moving in ways that don’t stir things up while still giving your body the stimulus it needs to recover. That might mean adjusting the weight, changing the movement or range of motion, pulling back the volume, or swapping certain exercises for pain-free alternatives.

Think of it as training around the pain, not through it.

Keeping some form of training going helps maintain strength, mobility, confidence, and routine – all of which make your return to full training much smoother. And of course, everyone’s situation is different, so getting some guidance ensures you’re doing the right things for your body.

So whether you’ve picked up a small niggle or are working through a bigger injury, you don’t necessarily need to hit the pause button. With the right plan, you can stay active, keep progressing, and rehab your way back to the things you love.

If you’re not sure where to start, we’re always here to help you figure out what you can safely keep doing.
